# AI TMS versus traditional TMS

A traditional TMS gives a carrier a place to record and manage loads. An AI TMS adds assistance with interpreting information, preparing work, and deciding what needs attention. Evaluate the difference through the work your team does for a load, including the time needed to verify and correct the result.

## What does AI-native mean in this comparison?

For a trucking team, the useful distinction is whether AI assistance has the load context needed for the next task: the rate confirmation, assigned capacity, status updates, documents, and approval history. Ask what stays connected when the load changes. A feature labeled AI can still leave the dispatcher copying information between systems.

RunaboutX is an [AI-native TMS available to North American trucking fleets](/ai-tms/). Its public walkthrough and workflow pages provide concrete examples to test in a demo; confirm the available implementation with your own source documents.

## Example 1: a rate confirmation is missing information

Use a redacted confirmation with a pickup window but no appointment number. In a traditional workflow, record the time spent reading the document, entering fields, and following up. In an AI-assisted workflow, inspect the prepared fields alongside their source, correct any errors, and check whether missing information remains visible before assignment.

The [AI Dispatcher example](/features/ai-dispatcher/) describes that review. The [rate confirmation checklist](/resources/learn/rate-confirmation-to-load-entry/) identifies the fields to compare. Keep both the preparation time and the review time in your measurement.

## Example 2: an ETA changes after dispatch

Give both systems the same scheduled appointment and a later status update. Can the dispatcher see the source and timestamp, identify who owns the exception, and record an approved response? Check how the decision reaches the next person responsible for the load.

RunaboutX's public [exception management example](/features/exception-management/) shows a manager reviewing a recovery proposal in an on-page simulation. Use a demo of the available product to test the actual approval and communication behavior your operation needs. The [AI fleet tracking guide](/resources/learn/ai-fleet-tracking/) helps test stale and conflicting signals.

## Example 3: delivery is complete but the POD is missing

Check whether the operations and billing teams can see the same missing document and who is responsible for the next action. When the POD arrives, inspect its load reference, delivery date, and signatures before the invoice handoff.

Use the [POD-to-invoice checklist](/resources/learn/pod-to-invoice/), [AI Billing workflow](/features/ai-billing/), and [driver settlement workflow](/features/driver-settlements/) to evaluate the customer and driver financial handoffs together.

## Compare controls and total work

| Evaluation point | Questions for any TMS | Extra question for an AI TMS |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Load data | Can the team correct fields and see history? | Can the reviewer inspect the source for a prepared field? |
| Dispatch | Who makes the assignment? | Can a person edit or reject a proposed action? |
| Exceptions | Who owns a late load? | Which source triggered the proposed response? |
| Billing | What evidence supports charges? | Which generated fields need review before issue? |
| Operations | How much time and rework does one load require? | Does the time saved include verification and corrections? |

## Customer feedback and your own baseline

A California trucking fleet reported more efficient dispatchers and fewer repetitive follow-ups and manual tasks during an October 1–14, 2026 RunaboutX pilot. [Read the approved pilot testimonial](/resources/case-studies/fleet-pilot/) with its 14-day context.

Use the [dispatcher workload guide](/resources/learn/reduce-dispatcher-workload/) to record your own preparation, review, interruption, and rework time. Keep availability, integrations, permissions, and implementation questions in the [buyer's guide](/resources/guides/trucking-tms-buyers-guide/). For the underlying record-keeping workflow, see [trucking TMS software](/tms/trucking/).
