# What is a TMS in trucking?

A transportation management system (TMS) is software for organizing transportation work. In a trucking carrier, the useful unit is often a load: what was booked, which equipment and driver will move it, what happened in transit, and what evidence finance needs afterward. A TMS should keep those facts connected so a change at one stage can be understood at the next.

## Follow one load

Imagine a shipper sends a rate confirmation for a two-stop movement. The operations team enters the agreed terms, assigns a truck and driver, tracks the pickup and delivery, records an exception if the appointment changes, attaches proof of delivery, then prepares an invoice and driver settlement. The TMS is the shared record across these handoffs. It may exchange data with telematics or accounting tools, but those connections should be verified individually.

## What a carrier should check

- Can a dispatcher see the original rate confirmation beside the entered fields?
- Can the team tell which status is current and when it was observed?
- Are exceptions assigned to a person and closed with an auditable decision?
- Can billing find the agreed rate, approved accessorials, and POD together?
- Can settlement staff trace a pay amount back to the load and approval?

If the vendor cannot show a complete load with a missing document or changed appointment, the demo may be showing only the easy path. A TMS is also distinct from an ELD: in the United States, [FMCSA describes ELDs](https://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/hours-service/elds/electronic-logging-devices) as devices that automatically record driving time for hours-of-service records; [Transport Canada describes Canadian ELD responsibilities](https://tc.canada.ca/en/road-transportation/electronic-logging-devices/electronic-logging-devices-commercial-drivers-motor-carriers) separately. Requirements differ by jurisdiction and operation.
