# Trucking TMS software for carriers

A trucking transportation management system (TMS), also called a transport management system, is the shared record a carrier uses to manage a load from booking through dispatch, tracking, delivery documents, invoicing, and driver settlement. It should let operations and finance work from the same facts when a plan changes. RunaboutX is an AI-native TMS available to North American carriers. Its public examples show the load record and AI-assisted preparation to evaluate with your own workflow.

## What should one load record show?

| Stage | Decision the team needs to make | Evidence to ask a vendor to show |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Intake | Is the load ready to accept? | Original rate confirmation, entered terms, and corrections |
| Dispatch | Which truck and driver are committed? | Assignment, constraints, approval, and change history |
| Transit | Does a delay need action? | Latest status, its source and timestamp, and exception owner |
| Delivery | Is the load complete? | Proof of delivery, missing items, and review status |
| Finance | Can the load be billed and settled? | Agreed rate, approved charges, invoice draft, and driver-pay inputs |

If a pickup time changes after dispatch, the useful test is whether the original appointment, updated time, person who approved it, and affected driver communication remain traceable in the load record. That is a buying criterion, not a claim about an unverified RunaboutX integration. The [carrier workflow guide](/resources/learn/what-is-tms-in-trucking/) follows the full load and explains how a TMS differs from an ELD.

## How to test a carrier TMS

Bring an anonymized load with a changed appointment, an accessorial, and a late POD. Have each vendor show the correction path from intake to settlement, including permissions, exception ownership, and export of the final record. Ask which steps are available in the product today and which require a separate tool or future connector. The [RFP checklist](/resources/guides/tms-rfp-checklist/) makes those questions reusable. Read [AI TMS](/ai-tms/) for the assistance and approval layer, or [carrier solutions](/solutions/carriers/) for team roles. [Book a demo](/#contact) to examine RunaboutX's current scope.
